In a recent interview that France and Monaco star, Eric had with SPORTMAIL, he said that he rejected former Barcelona team-mate, Dani’s liver when he was looking for a liver donor for his cancer treatment.

Eric who had just launched his Eric Abidal Foundation said: ‘My Barcelona team-mate, Dani Alves offered me his liver. He was serious but I could never have accepted it. He also has a family and a career. It is a massive operation and it was too much.’

It was Eric’s cousin, Gerard who had offered his to him, which eventually saved his life.

‘The risk for Gerard was huge. He saved my life. It is as simple as that.’

It was on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, that Barcelona announced that Eric had been diagnosed with a tumour in his liver and on Sunday, April 10, 2015, he underwent a successful surgery, with his cousin, Gérard being the donor.
