Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday in Durban, defeated South Africa 2-0 to win the annual Nelson Mandela’s challenge cup.
With both teams showing respect for each other, they were content with spreading passes across the pitch in the early stages of the game.
Obinna Nsofor showed glimpses of what he could do in the national team colours, taking a long range shot that bounced in front enroute goal, but the ball luckily struck the chest of the Khune to be directed out of play.
Not quite long after Nsofor’s effort,John Ogu had his own opportunity, skipping past a player and taking another long range shot,to force the keeper to another save.
But South Africa equally had their moments and could have gotten a goal just before the end of the first half, but Godfrey Oboabona threw his body on the line to block a Letsholonyane’s effort.
Stephen Keshi made three substitution at the start of the second half, throwing on Victor Moses,Ahmed Musa and Uche Nwofor.
South Africa started the brighter of both sides and Austin Ejide had to make two great saves to prevent a goal, first was Bernard Parker’s freekick and he had to react quickly to save the resulting rebound.
Nigeria’s substitution was telling as the momentum swung in their favour.
The Super Eagles went 1-0 up after Uche Nwofor who replaced Shola Ameobi, got a beautiful goal for his team.
Despite having his back at goal, the former Under 20 striker conjured up a piece of magic to score with a back heel, after the ball fell nicely to him in the box,and with the Bafana Bafana defence closing him down, the VVV Venlo striker with a piece of intelligence got the goal .
Nigeria made it 2-0 with a brilliant piece of teamwork by the three substitutes. Victor Moses played a through ball to Ahmed Musa, who in turn squared the ball to Uche Nwofor ,to simply tap in for his second goal of the night.
The victory further cemented Nigeria’s superiority over South Africa, making it six wins out of eight meetings.
