Police Corporeal, Ayo Ayuba, was lynched by hoodlums in Suru Alaba area of Lagos State for allegedly killing a trader, Mustapha Mohammed by beating him to death on the 30th of July, 2013. The Lagos State Police Command is investigating the case further.
Ayuba and another policeman had been deployed to chase traders away who had illegally taken over the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, causing gridlock. The road is also under construction by the Chinese Construction Engineering Company, who had complained that its makeshift construction site was being hijacked by traders.
The traders had overpowered the policemen deployed to disperse them, and in an attempt to protect himself and his colleague, Ayuba opened fire into the crowd and killed a trader, Mohammed in the process. Ayuba’s colleague fled immediately, leaving Ayuba to deal with the mob, which seized his gun and beat him with sticks and stones. Soldiers arrived to aid the lone corporeal, but they were greatly outnumbered by the crowd and were chased away.
By the time the police back arrived to help Ayuba and Mohammed, who were both rushed to a hospital, both were confirmed dead.
The matter is still under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.
