HIV Specialist, Dr. Victoria Isiramen of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), has said that 196, 000 adolescents are currently living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

Isiramen said that the figure represented 10 percent of adolescents between 10 and 19 years of age who are living with the virus across countries of the world.

“It is estimated that over 196, 000 adolescents between age 10 and 19 are living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, representing 10 percent of the total figure all over the world,” she said.

The UNICEF HIV specialist for adolescents and young people team leader added that the figure is a huge global burden as Nigeria ranks second highest country with the virus in the world.

Isiramen, who spoke during a two-day workshop in Makurdi, to sensitise stakeholders on the ‘All in’ agenda and ‘All in’ assessment process targeted at the age group in order to eliminate AIDS related illnesses by 2030, expressed optimism that the initiative would achieve its aim through three cardinal focus known as 90-90-90.

“To eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030, it means that by 2020, the vision of 90-90-90 which is to help fast track the idea would have been achieved. That is 90 per cent of adolescents that are HIV positive should have access to testing while 90 per cent of those tested should be on treatment and the other 90 percent should achieve virological suppression,” she added.
