Nigeria’s Sports Minister,Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi is delighted with the impressive performances of sprinter,Blessing Okagbare, tipping her to become a world champion.
Okagbare on Saturday emerged winner of the Women’s 100m event,at the Olympics Anniversary games in London, defeating the world champion,Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce to claim the top prize.
The manner with which she won the event, was eye-catching,as she erased two African records;first 10.86 in the heat and then did 10.79secs,in the finals to set a new one.
“She (Okagbare) has consistently shown by her performances that she has got what it takes to be a world champion. It is an impressive performance by any standard, breaking the Africa record two times within a short period. It shows that she is world-class and ranks among the best athletes in the world,” the minister said.
“I have no doubt that if she maintains her current form and peaks at the right time, she will win the women’s 100m event at the World Championships in Russia,” he added.
Okagbare will lead Nigeria’s charge into the Athletics World Championship next month,in Moscow, with the country’s medal hopes, once again resting on her shoulders.
