The death toll from the typhoon that struck the Philippines two weeks ago was raised Friday to 4,919, with officials warning that the figure could continue to climb as more bodies are recovered and identified across hard-hit areas.

The new casualty figures from Typhoon Haiyan—one of the world's most powerful storms ever recorded—neared the estimated 5,100 killed in 1991 from flashfloods caused by tropical storm Thelma, the most deaths recorded in a modern disaster in this Southeast Asian country.
