The Igando area of Lagos state on Tuesday was attacked by several militants who engaged policemen in a fiery gun battle.
The militants looted many shops, caused havoc and sent residents scampering for safety. Normalcy was however returned to the area later on in the day.
Speaking afterwards, a policeman said the militants are Ijaw youths.
“The attackers are Ijaw youths. They are young, slim and can easily swim away in water. They shot at us and three policemen were injured. They saw us and laid an ambush. When we got to a section of the river, they began to shoot. We replied the bullets. But three policemen were hit and injured.” he said.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos said the policemen who were shot in the encounter are receiving treatment and that no lives were lost.
