Slum dwellers in Lagos petitioned the Lagos State House of Assembly on the proposed Lagos Metropolitan Development Project funded by the World Bank. The project being worth N3.2 billion is designed to upgrade the social, human and infrastructural base of communities like Ajegunle, Agege, Amukoko, Badia, Ijeshatedo, Iwata, Ilaje-Bariga and Makoko, amongst others.

100 slum dwellers stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly to represent over 500,000 Lagosians living in slums and alleged plans by the World Bank in Nigeria and state officials to suspend the project.

Led by the Centre for Public Opinion Monitoring (CENPOM), a coalition of 20 civil societies organisation, the group stated that the impending cancellation of the project by the World Bank in itself was an issue, and may cause the possible transfer of funds to other elite projects being initiated by a “cash and carry” commissioner of the state.
