About 130 African migrants have been reported dead, and many more are yet to be found after a boat carrying them to Europe sank in the southern Italian Island of Lampedusa.

Reports indicate that the passengers flung themselves off the boat when a fire started onboard. More than 150 of the survivors have been rescued.

The UNHCR says that most of the migrants onboard the ship were from Somalia and Eritrea, and the coast guard said that the boat was sailing from Libya.

Spokeswoman for the International Organization for Migration in Rome, Simona Moscarelli has told the BBC that “at one point there was a fire on the boat and so the migrants moved, all of them, to one side of the boat which capsized".

She also said that she estimates that only about three of the 100 women onboard survived, adding that most of the migrants couldn’t swim.

The Prime Minister of Italy, Enrico Letta, in a tweet, said that it was “an immense tragedy.”

I hope they get the greener pasture they zealously searched for on the other side.
Tragic tho' :(
