The two-time African champions were on their way to Kaduna from Otta where they have been having intensive pre-season training ahead of the NPFL and the Caf Champions League, before they being dispossessed of their valuables at Okene, Kogi State.

Chukwudi Okanume explained that the robbers ambushed them after shooting sporadically into the air, robbed the players and officials of personal electronics and money.

He also confirmed that no player was molested and that there was no injury but that the players were yet to recover from the shock of the armed attacks.

He said the team had to stop in Okene and that the players are being psyched up to rid the trauma of the attack off their minds so as to continue the journey.

“We were attacked around Okene by armed robbers who came with lots of guns. They were shooting into the air. The players lost all what they had on them including phones, money, laptops and other valuables,” Okanume told Goal.

“We have not sat down to take stock of what was stolen. Everything happened in broad daylight but there was nobody to help us.”

Enyimba are the second team suffering this kind of attack second year running, after the unfortunate incident of Kano Pillars, who weren't so lucky, with five members of their delegation shot and out for almost five months into last season. Goal

The club's media officer, Farriel Allaputa, who confirmed the incident on their website said that the team arrived Kaduna safely at about 8:45 pm. We thank God Almighty for His mercy and protection. We further wish to use this opportunity to urge the authorities to improve security in areas known for their high rate of robbery incidents.

Enyimba Football Club remains committed to the success of the Super Four and will give our best throughout the tournament, despite how shaken up everyone is.
