The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) have written to World football governing body,FIFA assuring them of the security of the Malawian contingent for the 2014 World Cup qualifier next month.
Last weekend, the Malawian Football Association wrote to FIFA,requesting that the game be moved away from Calabar citing insecurity as the reason why the qualifier should not played there.
But on Wednesday, the NFF in conjunction with the Nigerian Police, wrote to FIFA presenting a detailed security guarantee and also a comprehensive plan for security for the Malawians.
Following the complaints of the Malawians,FIFA wrote to the NFF on Monday requesting that they provide a letter of security guarantee from the appropriate authority in Nigeria,as well as a detailed security plan for the game.
In the letter of security guarantee written to FIFA,the NFF said that: “apart from routine police lead escorts and back-up vehicles for both teams and match officials from point of arrival to point of departure, all hotels and training grounds to be used would be adequately fortified; anti-bomb squad would be deployed to sweep and maintain all hotels and training pitches; anti-bomb squad would sweep and secure the entire stadium along with Police elite squad (Police Mobile Force/Counter Terrorist Unit); adequate security would be provided on match day in the entire vicinity of the stadium and hotels of teams and match officials and; there would be police escorts for teams and match officials to and from stadium on match day, among other measures.”
The letter also assured FIFA that ACP Gideon Akinsola, FIFA National Security Officer in Nigeria, would be on duty for the game.
Nigeria leads Malawi with two points and needs just a point at the UJ Esuene Stadium to make the last stage of qualifiers.
The game will come up on September 7th.
