Former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell has been given an 18-month ban after he tested positive to doping.

Powell last year returned positive results in the Jamaican National trials in June which ruled him out from competing at the 2013 World Athletics Championship in Moscow.

The 31-year old Jamaican sprinter took a banned stimulant oxilofrine, and testified in January that his Canadian physical trainer Chris Xuereb provided him with nine supplements, including Epiphany D1.

He alongside other Jamaican sprinters athletes tested positive to banned substances last year which led to subsequent bans.

The other high-profile athlete to have been banned this week is Olympic gold medallist Sherone Simpson, who on Tuesday was equally banned for 18-months.

Both Powell and Simpson will now miss the 2014 Commonwealth Games commencing in July in Glasgow,Scotland.
