Sports Athletics: Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson's bans lifted

Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson have had their 18-month bans reduced to six months.

Both athletes had their bans upturned following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)which means that they are now free to immediately compete with others.

Powell and Simpson were both banned after they tested positive to stimulant oxilofrine at last year's Jamaican national championships.

The two athletes said their offence was minor because the positive results came from taking a contaminated version of Epiphany D1.

Their argument failed to convince the Jamaican anti-doping disciplinary panel in April who handed out the sanctions to them, backdating it to end in December 2014.

However after the CAS ruling, the athletes have now gotten approval to have their bans lifted.

Powell,a former world 100m record holder wrote on Twitter: "Finally this weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Justice has been served. Now let's run!"

The two athletes will however not be participating at the Commonwealth Games because the Jamaican team was selected when they were both suspended.
