The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has put forward seven demands from the Federal Government as preparations for the upcoming Workers’ Day on May 1, 2024, gain momentum.

Led by former Minister of Women’s Affairs, Pauline Tallen, the NLC emphasizes the urgent need for a new minimum wage to alleviate the plight of over 37 million Nigerian women and girls who struggle to afford sanitary pads amidst soaring prices. Alongside the wage demand, the congress advocates for the establishment of state and local government police forces to combat the nation's escalating insecurity.

The call for improved labour-government industrial relations, full minimum wage implementation across sectors, and resolution of pension arrears further highlight the NLC's commitment to enhancing workers' rights and welfare.

As negotiations between labour unions and the government continue, the anticipation grows for President Bola Tinubu's potential unveiling of the proposed minimum wage on Workers' Day, amid broader concerns over economic hardship and rising inflation.
