The Deputy National Organizing Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, has urgently appealed to the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to revoke the recent electricity tariff hike, denouncing it as a move against the interests of both the government and the party's electoral fortunes.
Duru voiced his concerns on Tuesday in Abuja, stressing the adverse impact of the current tariff increase on ordinary Nigerians and its potential to undermine the APC's standing ahead of upcoming elections. He called upon regulatory bodies to emulate the successful strategies implemented by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in the telecommunications sector, advocating for a transparent review of the concession agreements governing the power sector.
Duru criticized the prevailing inefficiencies in the distribution and generation of electricity, arguing that consumers should not bear the brunt of infrastructure inadequacies that ought to have been addressed by Distribution Companies (DisCos) and Generating Companies (GenCos). He highlighted discrepancies in tariff applications based on residential locations, emphasizing the need for a fair and uniform billing system reflective of actual power consumption.
Furthermore, Duru underscored the importance of holding power sector operators accountable for their failure to deliver adequate services despite privatization, urging for swift action to rectify systemic shortcomings and restore public confidence in the sector.
