The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos found itself plunged into darkness for a brief period, as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed challenges during an automatic switchover process. The incident, which occurred on February 2nd, 2024, lasted for approximately 2-3 minutes, sparking concerns among travelers and onlookers.

FAAN, in response to inquiries, revealed that the blackout ensued during the transition to backup power sources following a disruption in electricity supply from the national grid. The agency assured the public of efforts to rectify the situation promptly, with alternative power sources being utilized to prevent a recurrence of the outage.

Olubunmi Kuku, the managing director of FAAN, expressed regret over the incident, attributing it to an unexpected glitch in the automatic switchover mechanism. Despite the hiccup, FAAN remains committed to ensuring the seamless operation of the airport and the safety of passengers.

As the aviation industry continues to grapple with infrastructure challenges, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust backup systems and proactive maintenance to mitigate disruptions in critical facilities like airports. Stay tuned as FAAN endeavors to restore full functionality and address the underlying issues to prevent future incidents.
