NAFDAC has uncovered a complex network of counterfeit beverage producers operating in Eziukwu market, Aba, Abia State. The illicit activities, resembling a cartel, were exposed following an intelligence tip-off, prompting the closure of the market.

According to Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC director-general, the counterfeiters engaged in the production of a variety of adulterated products, including wines, soft drinks, and consumables. Notably, they targeted popular brands such as Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, Jenney, Chelsea London Dry Gin, Schnapp Dry Gin, McDowells, Black Labels, Gordons, Martell, Campari, Smirnoff ice, Eva non-alcoholic drink, and others.

The nefarious activities also involved date revalidation for expired products like Peak milk, powdered milk, ketchup, yoghurt, and Coca-Cola products. The counterfeit goods, camouflaged as genuine, were then sold to unsuspecting consumers.

During the operation, over 1500 cartons of fake and substandard products, with an estimated street value of over seven hundred and fifty million naira, were destroyed. Ten individuals were arrested at the scene and will face charges after a thorough investigation.

As the yuletide season approaches, NAFDAC urges Nigerians to remain vigilant and scrutinize branded drinks before consumption. Emphasizing the importance of purchasing only NAFDAC-registered drinks from reputable retailers, bars, and supermarkets, the agency provides tips to identify counterfeits, including checking for poor quality packaging, spelling mistakes, unusual bottle shapes, broken seals, and fake barcodes.
