The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has demanded the withdrawal of the recent tariff increase by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), arguing that it will exacerbate the cost of living for ordinary Nigerians and lead to the closure of local businesses.

NUEE, in a letter to the Minister of Power, emphasized that the hike would disproportionately affect consumers already grappling with economic challenges and force them to resort to purchasing foreign products.

The union expressed concern over the lack of stakeholder consultation before implementing the tariff adjustment, stressing that the decision would only deepen the financial burden on citizens.

Meanwhile, electricity generation in the country has plummeted to 2,775 megawatts, marking a significant decline from previous levels, according to data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator.
