Nigerian music sensation Wizkid has disowned the Afrobeat genre, despite being widely recognized as one of its prominent figures.

Through a series of Instagram posts, the Grammy award-winning artist, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, expressed his departure from the genre that has defined much of his career.

This declaration has sparked discussions among fans and media outlets, as Wizkid has been hailed as a leading figure in Afrobeat music both locally and internationally.

However, some Nigerians have criticized Wizkid's move, labeling it as a typical attention-seeking tactic.

They argue that his denial of Afrobeat and pursuit of recognition in other countries' genres may be a strategic move to garner attention and maintain relevance in the music industry.

Others suggest that Wizkid should explore alternative methods of gaining recognition and acclaim rather than disowning his roots.

Alongside this announcement, Wizkid revealed the completion of his latest studio album titled "Morayo," dedicated to his late mother, Jane Dolapo Balogun, who passed away in August 2023. The album, set to be his sixth studio release, pays tribute to his mother's memory and promises to showcase Wizkid's growth as an artist.

Notably, the singer previously honored his mother in the track "Mummy Mi" from his 2014 album "Ayo," demonstrating the profound influence she had on his life and music.

As fans eagerly await the release of "Morayo," Wizkid's departure from Afrobeat and his artistic evolution continue to captivate the music industry and his dedicated fanbase.
