A Nigerian swimming enthusiast, Dare Akinrodoye, undertook a remarkable journey on March 30, 2024, swimming the entire 11-kilometer length of the Third Mainland Bridge to raise awareness about mental health issues among youths.

Fondly called Coach Dreh, Akinrodoye spent over two hours submerged underwater, accompanied by teammates, supporters, press, and medical personnel.

Beginning at 9:28 am, he swam continuously for 2 hours and 33 minutes until completing the challenging feat.

Physically exhausted yet fulfilled, Akinrodoye's mission aimed to extend support and solidarity to those struggling with mental health and suicidal thoughts. His initiative garnered support from Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mobolaji Ogunlende, emphasizing the government's backing.

Akinrodoye's motivation stemmed from a desire to combat the alarming rates of depression and suicide in Nigeria, where access to mental health care remains limited.

Nigeria ranks seventh globally in depression cases and fifteenth in suicide frequency, with inadequate psychiatric resources for its large population. In 2023, Nigeria was rated the fifth most suicide-prone country worldwide.

Akinrodoye's courageous endeavor serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity, shedding light on the urgent need for mental health awareness and support in the country.
