In response to the escalating cost of living and the hardships faced by millions, the federal government is gearing up to restart direct cash transfers, targeting the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians.

The revelation came from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, during the Ministry's retreat in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state on Wednesday, February 21.

Currently benefiting approximately 3 million recipients, the government anticipates an additional 12 million households could qualify for these direct payments due to the challenging economic situation. Edun emphasized that the expansion aims to put more money directly into the hands of those who need it most, allowing them to prioritize their needs and alleviate poverty.

The decision to inform the President of the Panel's recommendation before the final report is completed underscores the urgency of the situation. Edun highlighted the use of technology to ensure smooth and transparent payments, aiming to avoid manual processes and delays.

The government is also addressing the impact of food prices on household budgets, taking steps to increase food availability and drive down costs.
