The House of Representatives has approved a bill aimed at bolstering the salaries and allowances of judicial office holders across Nigeria, following its transmission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The bill, passed on Wednesday, seeks to significantly enhance the monthly remuneration of various judicial positions. Notably, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is slated to receive a total monthly package of N5,385,047.26, while other Supreme Court Justices are set to earn N4,213,192.54.

Additionally, the President of the Court of Appeal is earmarked for a monthly package of N4,478,415.78. The bill outlines similar adjustments for justices of the Court of Appeal and other key judicial figures, with monthly packages ranging from N3,527,022.61 to N3,726,665.40.

These packages encompass basic salaries and regular allowances, including provisions for motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance. The bill's passage signals a significant move towards addressing long-standing concerns regarding judicial remuneration and ensuring the financial well-being of key figures within the judiciary.

However, reactions to the bill have been mixed, with some expressing concerns about potential implications for judicial independence and the risk of undue influence, while others view it as a necessary step towards ensuring fair compensation for judicial officers.
