Adachukwu Okafor, a lawyer residing in Anambra State, has been remanded by the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka for allegedly brutally assaulting her 11-year-old house help, Happiness Nwafor. Facing two charges under the Violence Against Persons Laws of Anambra State, Okafor is accused of willfully inflicting physical injuries on the minor using knives and sharp objects.

The accused turned herself in after the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, placed a N2m bounty on her. Pleading not guilty in court, Okafor's bail application was denied, with the case adjourned to February 28, 2024.

Despite complaints from her defense counsel, Chijioke Nwankwo, about trial by ordeal by the state ministry, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, trusts the court to ensure justice. The ministry plans a media sensitization program to educate the public about child abuse's dangers
