The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu's government's recent decision to increase electricity tariffs, labeling it as a "reckless move" that neglects the welfare of the Nigerian populace. The NEF, represented by Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, its Director of Publicity and Advocacy, expressed grave concern over the detrimental impact the tariff hike would have on an already struggling population, exacerbating the gaping disparity between the affluent and the impoverished.

The breakdown of the new tariff structure reveals staggering costs, with 24 hours of electricity per day estimated at a prohibitive N5,400, translating to an insurmountable monthly sum of N162,000 and an astronomical annual total of N1,971,000. The NEF emphasizes that such exorbitant rates are beyond the means of the average Nigerian, who grapples with economic hardship daily.

Condemning the government's decision as callous and shortsighted, the NEF warns of the potential security ramifications stemming from heightened economic disparity. It accuses the government of perpetuating economic oppression and exploiting the populace for personal gain, demonstrating a stark disconnect between leadership and the citizenry.

The NEF calls on the government to urgently reconsider its decision, urging Nigerians to demand accountability and reminding leaders of their primary obligation to serve the people's interests.
