South Africa's parole board has approved the early release of Oscar Pistorius, the former Paralympian sentenced for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, who claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fatally shot her through a bathroom door, is set to be released on January 5. The decision sparks renewed international discussion on gender-based violence and justice, considering the infamous nature of the case and the societal implications.

Steenkamp's family, notably her mother June, did not attend the parole hearing, expressing fatigue after Barry Steenkamp's recent death. June Steenkamp urged the parole board to prioritize the safety of women, asserting that Pistorius never accepted targeting her daughter. Despite doubts about Pistorius's rehabilitation voiced by June Steenkamp, she expressed her non-opposition to his release if deemed appropriate by officials.

The parole will come with conditions, requiring Pistorius to attend programs addressing anger issues and violence against women, along with completing community service. He will be confined to Pretoria, unable to leave without notifying authorities, adding another layer to the ongoing narrative surrounding Pistorius's complex legal journey.
