The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) reports that more than half of the country's poultry farms closed their doors in 2023, signaling a crisis in the sector. Mr. Mojeed Iyiola, Chairman of the PAN Lagos State chapter, voiced the distressing situation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Poultry farmers are grappling with challenges meeting the surging demand for poultry products, resulting in a scarcity of eggs. Iyiola disclosed that the shortage has driven egg prices to unprecedented levels, with a crate fetching as much as N3,000 and above.

The chairman emphasizes the need for sustained government interventions, especially in subsidizing feed inputs, to rejuvenate the struggling poultry industry. The surge in production costs, driven by soaring maize prices, stands as a major obstacle, with maize prices spiking by 79.23% year-on-year.

The industry faces a daunting task of recovery, demanding swift and effective measures to ensure food security and economic stability.
