A military commander stationed at an army camp in Sabon Garin Dan’Ali, located in Katsina state's Danmusa local government area, has been fatally shot in an ambush. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, with reports indicating that the deceased, identified as a major in the army, fell victim to the attack while responding to a call for reinforcement in Malali village, situated in the Kankara local government area. Malali, positioned along the Zangon Pawwa road, has been heavily infiltrated by bandits, posing significant security challenges to the region.
According to sources, the commander, known for his prompt responses to calls for reinforcement, arrived at the scene using a Hilux vehicle due to the unavailability of Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) at the time. Tragically, he was ambushed by assailants who targeted his vehicle and fatally shot him in the head. The retrieval of his body was marred by a fierce gun battle between the bandits and military personnel, resulting in additional injuries to an officer involved in the retrieval process.
The incident underscores the escalating security crisis in Kankara local government, which has witnessed a surge in banditry attacks in recent times. Villages in the area have been forced to desert their communities due to the persistent threat posed by armed bandits. Despite efforts to contain the situation, including calls for reinforcement, the region remains vulnerable to such attacks.
As investigations into the ambush continue, the Public Relations Officer of the 17 Brigade in Katsina, Oiza Ehinlaiye, remained unreachable for comment at the time of reporting. The loss of the military commander serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by security personnel in the fight against insecurity, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
