The Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices, nominees put forward by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fill existing vacancies on the apex court bench.

The confirmation comes following a meticulous review by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, culminating in Thursday's plenary session. President Tinubu had urged the Senate to confirm the nominees, recommended by the National Judicial Council to address vacancies resulting from the death and resignation of some justices.

Notable among the confirmed justices are Justice Haruna Tsammani, who previously chaired the Presidential Election Petition Court, and Justice Chidiebere Uwa from the South East.

The confirmation ensures the Supreme Court reaches its full complement of 21 justices. However, senators express concerns over the delays in justice appointments, emphasizing the need for immediate replacements in the event of future vacancies.

The Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, stresses the importance of swift screenings and appointments for successors, while Senator Orji Uzor Kalu advocates for a review of the judiciary's budget to enhance its effectiveness.
