The Nigerian government has restated its commitment to centralizing its data through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, emphasized the government's dedication to the program's success and confidently stated that the era of multiple ID registrations will soon be over, according to Arise News.

During a meeting with the MTN management team in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of a technology-driven data hub under his ministry. "We must have an interior hub, a massive data center where we will have all our identity information documented," he said.

Tunji-Ojo believes that data harmonization is the key to success. "The integrity of our travel documents must be restored through the harmonization of our data. This way, Nigerians won't have to undergo repetitive data capture processes during the passport enrollment phase when they possess a valid NIN," he added.

He also elaborated on the benefits of data harmonization, explaining that it would reduce stress for Nigerians and cut overhead costs for the government. He envisions a system where data related to driving licenses, passports, Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), National Identity Numbers (NIN), and Subscribers Identity Modules (SIM) are integrated into digital chips - this would streamline the planning and execution of government programs, accelerating national development.

The Minister also underlined the potential role of the private sector, such as MTN, in realizing this vision. He indicated that partnerships might be essential given the financial constraints NIMC faces.

This move signifies a step towards a more efficient and unified identity system for Nigerians, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and paving the way for streamlined governmental processes.
