South Africa's Parliament has voted to shut down the country's embassy in Pretoria and suspend diplomatic relations with Israel.

The decision comes amidst escalating tensions over Israel's assault on Gaza. While the motion, passed with 248 votes in favor and 91 against, is largely symbolic, it highlights the deep divisions within the South African government.

The left-wing Economic Freedom Fighters led the charge, supported by the ruling African National Congress and opposed by the white-majority Democratic Alliance.

President Cyril Ramaphosa's government now faces the decision of whether to implement this impactful move.
