In a thrilling 2024 Olympic Qualifier game held in Addis Ababa, the Super Falcons of Nigeria faced Ethiopia's Lucy, resulting in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. The outcome sets the stage for an intriguing return leg in Abuja next Tuesday.

Ethiopia took an early lead in the 6th minute when Birkie Amare capitalized on a corner kick, surprising the Super Falcons. However, Nigeria's Captain Rasheedat Ajibade quickly equalized with a scorching shot from the edge of the box just six minutes after the second half began.

With Asisat Oshoala leading the striking position and Uchenna Kanu and Gift Monday operating on the wings, Nigeria adapted its tactics. Michelle Alozie shifted to left back, allowing Nicole Payne to take charge on the right. Oluwatosin Demehin and Akudo Ogbonna anchored the defense, with Christy Ucheibe and Halimatu Ayinde unavailable. Peace Efih joined Toni Payne and Ajibade in midfield.

The match remained tight in the first half, with few opportunities for both teams. Nigeria's Oshoala missed a chance from Payne's cross. After Ajibade's equalizer, the Super Falcons seized control. A potential winning goal by Ifeoma Onumonu was denied, and an opportunity created by Payne and Onumonu saw Oshoala unable to capitalize.

The Falcons celebrated what they thought was a late victory when Onumonu headed the ball into the net. However, a foul play was spotted in the build-up by the referee, Lamia Atman. The teams will face each other again in Abuja, with the winner on aggregate advancing to the third round. The winner of the Cameroon/Uganda fixture awaits in the next round.
