The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) revealed that a boat mishap near Onitsha, Anambra State, claimed the lives of two people, including Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, known as Junior Pope.
Twelve individuals were onboard, with seven rescued and three missing. Initial reports suggested the incident occurred in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, but it happened in the outskirts of Onitsha, in the Akpaka Area and Nsugbe of Anambra East Local Government Area.
NIWA, alongside the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and Marine Police, is conducting rescue and recovery operations. The cause of the mishap remains unclear pending further investigation by NIWA officials at the scene.
