Birmingham City Football Club has appointed Wayne Rooney as its manager, securing a three-and-a-half-year contract. Rooney takes on the role after leaving his position as Head Coach of Major League Soccer's D.C. United. He will be joined by former England international teammate Ashley Cole and other coaches, including John O’Shea and Carl Robinson. Notably, Ashley Cole and John O’Shea will retain their coaching roles with their respective national sides.

Rooney, a former England striker, began his managerial career with Derby County in January 2021, guiding the club to safety in the Sky Bet Championship. Despite challenges like a 21-point deduction in his first full season, he achieved impressive results. He then joined D.C. United but has now taken on the role of manager at Birmingham City.

Birmingham City's Co-Owner and Chairman of the Board, Tom Wagner, praised Rooney's winning mentality and expressed the club's belief that Rooney would lead the team to realize their ambitions. Chief Executive Officer Garry Cook highlighted the excitement surrounding Rooney's arrival and the confidence in his ability to build a young, attack-minded team.

Rooney, in his response, expressed his delight at joining Birmingham City at a promising time for the club. He outlined his vision for the team and emphasized the goal of creating a winning culture with an identity that excites the fans. Rooney acknowledged the passionate Birmingham City fans and their role in supporting the team.

The appointment allows Rooney to evaluate the squad and work on recruitment ahead of transfer windows in January and the summer. Rooney and his coaching staff are determined to elevate the club to the next level and meet fans' expectations
