Benue State is located in the middle-belt region of Nigeria. It has a 2006 population census of 4.5 million people. Its main capital is Makurdi. The state is dominated by the Idoma and Tiv people, but there are also other tribes such as the Igede, Abakwa, Etulo, Jukun, Igala, Nyifon, and Akweya among others. It is known as the “Food Basket” of the nation because the people are predominantly farmers.
Benue State was carved out of the former Benue-Plateau State in 1976, but a part of it and that of Kwara State was also carved out in 1991 to form the newly created Kogi State. Developed into a ranch by the military government of Aper Aku in 1983, the Ikyogen hills is a large expanse of sprawling hills which present a fascinating sight to all visitors to the area. This game reserve is one of the few in the state reserves where visitors and tourists can see wild and rare animals in their natural habitats. The Tor Tiv palace is located in Gboko, and is the official residence of the Tiv people. The palace is rich in historical artifacts and it tells the story and history of the Tiv people.
