Nigerian authorities have extended the deadline for African telecoms giants, MTN, to pay the $5.2bn fine imposed on it for not disconnecting unregistered lines.

The Nigerian Communications Commissions also indicated it will not lower the amount for a company it accuses of routinely flouting regulations.

"They (MTN) have always been flouting regulations," NCC Spokesman, Tony Ojobo told The Associated Press.

"The fine remains but the appeal and other engagements with MTN may affect the payment deadline."

Institutional investors have complained the fine is punitive and warned it could deter investment in Nigeria, but the regulator's statement said "sanctions are the last resort after all overtures fail but this does not in any way undermine industry standards and the interest of investors."
