Presidents are the number one citizens in a country. As a result, a host of them are well remunerated, earning more than the average citizens. However this isn't so for some, as their yearly pay is lower than that of their counterparts.

Here's a list of five least paid presidents in the world according to RichestLifestyle:

5) Pranab Mukherjee, President of India – Annual Salary: $28,800

Pranab Mukherjee has been the President of India since July 2012. He earns a monthly salary of $2,400, which is among the least in the world. Even top officials of many private companies earn more than this.

However, he lives in Rashtrapathi Bhavan, a massive structure with 340 rooms! He has a staff of 200 to maintain the plush building. He also has retreats in Hyderabad and Shimla

4) Xi Jinping, President of China – Annual Salary: $22,300

China’s president Xi Jinping governs a massive nation with a population of around 1.4 billion. He earns $22,300 per annum. His salary was recently increased by 62 percent, as part of a broader pay increase for civil servants. Xi’s monthly salary increased from $1,120 to $1,854 as a result of the recent pay rise.

Despite this increase, the salary is much less than those of his peers. UK Prime Minister David Cameron gets over $219,800 every year, that's almost 10 times that of the Chinese president.

3) Beji Caid Essebsi, President of Tunisia – Annual Salary: $16,400

Beji Caid Essebsi has been the president of Tunisia since December 2014. His predecessor Moncef Marzouki had announced his decision to voluntarily take a two-thirds pay cut in 2014. He was receiving a net income of around $12,000 from a gross wage of around $19,000. He was of the opinion that the state has to be a model to deal with the nation’s deteriorating financial situation. He had ordered reductions in the expenses of the presidency. The monthly salary of the President of Tunisia is around $1,350.

2) Macky Sall, President of Senegal – Annual Salary: $15,600

Macky Sall came from a poor family. He became Senegal's President in April 2 2012. He earns a monthly salary of $1,300, which is higher than the $867 received by his predecessors Abdou Diouf and Abdoulaye Wade.

The 53-year-old geologist served as Wade’s prime minister between 2004 and 2007. Before that he held the interior and mines portfolios. He has also served as mayor of Fatick, his home town, for two terms.

1) José Mujica, President of Uruguay – Annual Salary: $15,000 (10% of Official Salary)

Jose Mujica has been the President of Uruguay since 2010. Technically, he isn't the least paid president - Mujica official salary is $144,000 per year; but he donates about 90 percent of his salary to charities.

His austere lifestyle – has given him the distinction of being the most generous political leader and dubbed the poorest president in the world. He does not have a bank account and has very few debts. He lives in a modest house at his wife’s flower farm, and drives a 1987 VW Beetle. His official transport vehicle is a humble Chevrolet Corsa, which he calls “the presidential car”.
