The Nigerian Senate on Thursday rejected the nomination of Ibrahim Magu’s as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. His rejection came after a closed-door session stating that his rejection was based on “security report.”
What could have been responsible for Magu's nomination rejection? Here are likely reasons why:
1. His Anti-corruption Clampdown – The Senate may have rejected Ibrahim Magu because of his anti-corruption clampdown that have rounded up lawmakers, and mostly members of the opposition party.
2. Pitching Tent With Buhari: The Senate may have rejected Magu's nomination because he may be seen as blowing trumpet of President Mohammadu Buhari's administration who is also stiff on trying politicians of corrupt practices.
3. Another Northern Appointment: Also, the Senate may have rejected Mr Magu as the EFCC Chair so as to falter another appointment from the North, as President Buhari's appointments so far has majorly tilted towards the North. Ibrahim Mustapha Magu is a Kanuri from Borno state.
4. Buhari's Not-to-good Relationship with the Senate: The Senate may have perceived Magu as being planted by President Buhari to sniff into their actions, as the President is not in good terms with the Senate.
5. Security Report:
Well, according to Aliyu Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the House, he said: “The Senate wish to inform the public that based on available security report, the Senate cannot proceed with confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
“The nomination of Ibrahim Magu is hereby rejected and has been returned to the President for further action,”
