Sports AC Milan no longer wants Fernando Torres: Maybe he should just retire from football

Reports surfaced today that AC Milan are going to send Fernando Torres back to Chelsea after failing to impress at the Italian club.

It leaves a question of what would have been for the Spaniard, who was once the most revered and feared striker in the world.

Moving from Liverpool at his peak in the winter of 2011, Torress failed to leave up to that huge price-tag, that saw Chelsea cough out a whooping £50million for him.

AC Milan is seen as a place where 'oldies' go to resurrect or better put - show the world that they can still compete.

But if a player fails to hit those heights there, there is only place the person can go from there- downward spiral.

The 30-year old left Chelsea in the summer, moving to Milan on a two-year long loan deal, which was done to ease him out of Chelsea.

But, Milan are seeking to cancel the deal, just after three months and his former club Atletico Madrid have turned down the chance to take him back on loan in a swap deal which would have sent Italy winger Alessio Cerci to the San Siro.

Apparently Chelsea ran out of patience waiting for him to come around, but Jose Mourinho doesn't pass across as someone who has an enormous amount of that virtue in his strides.

It is difficult seeing where the problems are, because his track record during his days at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool are nothing short of enviable.

He was very lethal in front of goal and left defenders for dead, ask Nemanja Vidic who got a handful of red cards when he squared up against him, Torres has the appearance and complete stature of a striker well emblazoned.

But it must be admitted, the move to Chelsea hastened his rapid decline.

One, he suffered a crisis of confidence, living daily with being the most expensive player in British football then, he never seemed to have recovered from that.

Playing each day to justify your price-tag, has its own burdens and it really showed in his game.

Another big factor was having Didier Drogba to contend with at Chelsea.
The Ivorian was simply indispensable then at Chelsea, even now, he has still proven what a valuable asset he still is to the Blues.

Torres couldn't just displace him and it was difficult for him to establish himself in the team.

Mourinho showed faith in Torres for just one season and decided that he has had enough.

You can't really blame the Portuguese, the goals tally of Torres is somewhat disappointing.

In 172 appearances for the Blues, he was only able to score just 45 goals; meaning that each goal he scored for Chelsea cost more than £1million.

And at Milan,he has netted just once in 10 appearances. Maybe he has gone past his prime.

But it is difficult seeing Torres do it again on the big stage, and at 30, age is no longer on his side.
