Wife of the president, Mrs. Aisha Buhari caused a social media storm for carrying a black crocodile skin Hermes Birkin handbag, as Nigerians on Thursday took to different social media platforms to express their mixed feelings.

Mrs. Buhari was spotted with the 35cm Porosus Crocodile bag, which is estimated to cost anywhere between $50,000 and $300,000, at the airport in Washington D.C., when she arrived the United States Wednesday for some engagements.

A Hermes Himalayan Crocodile Birkin bag was reportedly auctioned for $432,000 recently.

The news, which was broken by an online media, The Signal, tweeting from @thesignalng, set the Twitter-sphere ablaze with the discovery.

The tweet read: “Aisha Buhari spotted in the US with a Hermes Gold Bag worth $105,000 (N40,950,000) at $1 to N390.

“Further checks by Signal on Thursday revealed that the exact pink version of Aisha Buhari’s Hermes handbag was auctioned in 2015 for $222,912 (N86,935,680) at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong.”

If true, given the economic recession the country is currently facing, the news of Mrs. Buhari toting the Crocodile Gold Hardware bag provided fodder for controversy.

@curator This is not about whether or not she can afford or earned it. Buhari rode to power on lies that he is a frugal man who had only 150 cows and unable to afford a N1 million Naira nomination form. Spas dont generate that much in katsina(if thats where it is), So, where did this sudden wealth come from? Let us even assume this and many others are gifts, should she be accepting such expensive gifts knowing her husband is the “epitome” of anti corrupt practices? If you accept such an expensive gift, what are you closing your eyes to?
We are in a recession. I expect some sacrifice from the first family. I blame Buhari he should man his household. Even when we hear this wife is headstrong and does not care very much for the old man’s stance regarding frugal living.

They are all a bunch of hypocrites!!!! Imagine a Deziani or Patience with that bag? they will say thief or kwaruption. More reasons to loose hope in Nigeria. I am beginning to believe @Jules statement Nigeria cannot get better in the next 50 years.
