A huge vacuum has been created in the Nigerian Judiciary. The country nolonger has a Chief Justice as Justice Mahmud Mohammed bows out of the Bench of the Supreme Court, today after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

By precedent, the most senior justice has been appointed CJN but President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to act on the recommendation.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) in October had recommended the most senior Supreme Court Justice, Walter Samuel Onnoghen, for consideration for appointment as CJN. The President however, has the right to reject the NJC's recommendation but must consult with the body when making his pick.
