Mr. Sylvester Opara, a former employee of Nycil Limited who worked at their chemical plant is suing the company for N18 million over accusations of being exposed to cancer causing agents while he worked at the plant. Mr. Opara claimed that he had been diagnosed with Laryngeal – cancer of the larynx – since June 8, 2012, an illness he would not have contracted if not for the cause of Nycil Limited.

The 56 year old former employee claimed that he had been working for Nycil Limited since 1985, for 28 years until his termination and sought the National Industrial Court, Lagos to order the firm to pay him N18m for damages and to cover the cost of his treatment in the United States of America.

He claimed that he had been exposed to a minimum of six types of harmful chemicals used by his former employers, such as Acrylamide, known to cause cancer.

The suit is still pending in court.
