Suspected hired assassins on Sunday evening attacked Usman Ndanbabo, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander of the Ughelli Area Police Command, in Delta state.

According to The Punch, he was accosted while driving alone, and was shot twice at close range by the gunmen.

A security source reportedly said “he (Ndanbabo) was returning home from an outing at about 8pm in his Nissan SUV when he noticed that a Toyota car had been trailing him.

“He tried fleeing from his car when he got to the roundabout opposite the palace of the Ovie of Ughelli along Isoko Road, only for his assailants to open fire on him, shooting him on the back and his stomach and left him for dead.”

He is lying critical ill at an undisclosed hospital in Warri at the moment after some hospitals he had earlier been rushed to claimed they lacked the expertise to handle the injuries he sustained from the gunshots.

There is anxiety and fear in the area and neighbouring towns as a result of the shooting with the security level increased.

The State Police Commissioner, CP Zanna Ibrahim, rushed to see him at the hospital and has confirmed the incident but said that it was not a life-threatening attack.

“Nobody has been arrested in connection with the attack. We are waiting until he recovers to give us hint," he added.
