The federal government has introduced new policies aiming to end the 75 per cent wastage annually recorded in tomato production in Nigeria.

The government spoke through the Minister of State for Trade, Hajiya A’isha Abubakar, recently.

She said that new policies to enhance farm produce storage and were underway.

She said that the ministry was working on policies to boost local processing of tomato and other perishable products.

She inspected facilities at the Erisco company which has an installed tomato production capacity of 450,000 metric tonnes per annum, according to Erisco Chairman, Chief Eric Umeofia.

She stated that the current administration of President Muhammad Buhari was committed to encouraging local manufacturing and promoting local content in line with its agenda to diversify the economy.
