Just like in Nigeria, university teachers in Ghana have decided to snub classes until their demands are met. President John Mahama has appealed to them to call off the strike as plans were in place to meet their needs.
The lecturers are demanding full payment of their market premium arrears and allowances which haven't been paid for more than a year, following Ghana's adoption of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
A meeting on wednessday between the Ghana Fair Wage and Salaries Commission and representatives of the lecturers to address the issue ended without a solution.
The strike will continue if demands are not met, said Dr. Anthony Summons, President of the University Teachers' Association of Ghana.
