The governor of Benue State, Dr Samuel Ortom, yesterday appointed Bem Maladu as an acting Secretary to the State Government after the former SSG, Targema Takema, had slumped and flown abroad for medical treatment.

According to LEADERSHIP, there was serious confusion in major towns of Benue State yesterday when the news of Takema’s alleged death filtered in. Sources said the SSG may have given up the ghost at the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was being treated. But, the Takema family and Benue State government were yet to officially announce the death of the SSG.

The top government official, according to hospital sources, was said to have collapsed due to high blood pressure that led to a stroke. He was said to have been managing the condition with medication.

The contest for who would replace the then sick SSG had begun, with notable members of the APC, as well as technocrats from the Jemgbah extraction where Takema came from, lobbying Senator George Akume and Governor Ortom to allow them occupy the juicy government position.

Meladu, who was the special adviser on economic investment, had been asked to oversee the office of the special adviser on special duties since the remand in prison of Joseph Ikyaagba, who was arrested over the killing of the governor’s senior special assistant on security, the late Denen Igbana.

The letter conveying the appointment of the acting SSG, Meladu, was signed by the chief of staff to the governor, Terwase Orbunde, and announced by the special adviser to the governor on media, Tahav Agerzua.
