Nigeria - 82 year-old Iyaloja-General of Ijebuland, Alhaja Saidat Elewuju, has been assassinated.
She was said to have been hacked to death by six gunmen around 3pm on Wednesday. She was aged 82 years.
The octogenarian was reportedly first riddled with bullets before being cut with machete at her home in OGD Estate, Itorin-Sabo, Ijebu Ode. She was thereafter left in a pool of blood.
Her assailants did not steal any valuable in the house.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said policemen initially rushed her to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State for medical attention.
“She was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where she died," around 11pm.
Reports say Elewuju had been buried according to Islamic rites in Ijebu Ode on Thursday.
Adejobi said the command had commenced investigation into the killing, assuring residents of the state that the assailants would soon be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.
Elewuju was said to have attended the Ramadan Iftar lecture held last Saturday at the Arcade Ground, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, hosted by the state government.
Alhaja Elewuju was a very active and outspoken woman on issues about politics in the state.
