A huge explosion has rocked a pipeline operated by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in the Niger Delta.

The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) pipeline at Sanomi Creek, around the Ogidigben area of Warri South West, exploded around 8 p.m. local time (1900 GMT), on Thursday.

NPDC is a subsidiary of NNPC.

Reports say people nearby heard "a loud explosion".

"There is fire burning," said Chief Godspower Gbenekama, a local community leader.

Although nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast, the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, have been behind recent blasts in the area.

Nigeria's oil production output has fallen to a 20-year low due to recent incessant attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta, impacting the country's already depleted revenue.

On Wednesday, the NDA said rejected an offer to start talks with the government.
