Tributes have continued to pour in over the death of Jayalalithaa Jayaraman, governor of India's Tamil Nadu state and known nationally as the "Iron Lady". Jayaraman died on Monday after suffering a heart attack, officials said. She was 68 years old.

"It is with indescribable grief we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalavi Amma," Apollo Hospitals in Chennai said on Monday.

The hospital has earlier reported that Jayaraman was on life support systems, as well as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a treatment for lung failure in which an external machine removes carbon dioxide from, and adds oxygen to, the bloodstream.

The former film star served as Tamil Nadu chief minister four times. She had been receiving treatment for months.

Jayalalitha is revered by many but seen by her critics as having created a cult of personality over the years.
