President Goodluck Jonathan has said that four years is not enough for any one to build the nation.

Jonathan said this at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, Sunday during the 2014 Democracy Day Interdenominational Church Service.

According to him, because nation building is a continuous process, the most important thing is for a leader to start very well and continue to do things very well.

The president said for any leader to move a nation forward, he/she has to select some few things, do them well and continue to do them very well to get to where he/she desires.

Nation building? Let us speak to the architechs before we start pricing cement :)

For too many many years we have had no architechs but we continue to mould blocks to put up houses on a foundation of sand that eventually collapses.

In all honesty, one year is sufficient to make an impact. Endless years would not be available for any progress to be recorded. Except the period to consolidate corruption.

Surely, four years should be enugh to clear the land and lay a solid foundation

If it has to take as long as four years to clear the land, and lay foundation, how many years will be required to start foundation?. All the anticipation of many years before recording success, applies only to Nigerian politicians.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

Moreover, one man can't start and finish the job.

I am of the opinion that"Rome wasn't built in a day" as defective, and also defeatist statement. If some one or any body lives on that statement, such a person is simply saying that to do little or nothing while on the throne or governance makes no difference. This is a Nigerian mentality. once it takes as long as four years to lay foundation, it implies that another four years would be required to start building. That approach is called; Nigerian factor. I belief politicians have tricked voters or electorate enough. There is one statement from politicians immediately after assumption of office, "I require six months to settle down" what a shameful statement playing on the psyche of Nigerians. All Nigerian 'rulers' since 1960 are unwilling presidents. For a long time to come, we shall all have that imbroglio to contend with.

It is amazing, when people say, "one man can't start and finish the job". Lagos state Governor Fashola started Apapa- Osodi project and finished it, and there are no miscreants at Osodi any longer. He started Lekki road and toll bridge and finished it. Countless of completed projects. Osun state Governor Aregbesola started school building projects and finished state by state. The same applies to road links and feeder roads in all city centers like Ile-Ife, Ila Orangun, Ilesa, Ikire, Iwo. etc are all eye sore.
Now, FG started electrification by privatization, a professor headed that project. it neither finishes nor with land mark success rather, laid off 'NEPA' no one even know what name they are called at the moment. Road construction started from the days of Gen. Obasanjo Bi-Courtney (Lagos - Ibadan expressway, there was nothing to show for it and the project was cancelled eventually. Jonathan started on its own, still on-going; yet, hardship disruption, harrowing experiences among worst scenarios is their dividends, etc. What project has FG started that has headway? Professors are at the headship of all these failed projects. Education in Nigeria is in comatose yet, professors kept on inaugurating lectures regularly. Education continued elusive to average parents/guardians. Therefore, FG's body language is "one man can't start and finish the job". where is Nigeria going.

@Tajudeen don't forget that Nigeria is a country made up of 36 different states with over 300 different languages. Its not an easy task. Surely a lot can be done in one year but will it be enough?

Buh all these are talks. Just talks. Let the architects come out first. "The price that the wise pay for not participating in an election is to be ruled by fools." - Socrates

Look, don't they (politicians) know there are 36+FCT makes Nigeria before aspiring for position?. Are you there, if you wish to be lured into deceit of difficulty or impossibilities of getting things done on time, I won't be. I think it is about time that Nigerian should resist been deceived by analogue politicians. They know nothing, but how to loot government treasury. The technology era is now of "digital" age politicking. The digital age tech politicking is the that which would launch out his/her program as if the end shall come the next day. Mind you, the seat-tight syndrome of analogue yesteryear's politicians should be over. Therefore, four years is simply ideal for things to work. if you write a soft code grogram that calculates ten digital characters correctly, the same program would calculate for 1million digital characters correctly. What about that? those who have anything to deliver do not complain but swing into performance. Take note.

I think you will find that politics around the world is an analogue game. Do not be deceived by the hype. Also once you start getting into politics and governance the more analogue the game becomes as you have to take 5 million things into consideration before making a decision.
The problem is not with the mode of communication but with the philosophy before entering office and the systems you find once in office.

I do not believe you can change a country the size of Nigeria in 4 years alone as president. What happens at the local government level, state level, what are our senators and reps doing? What is happening at the state houses of assembly? These are also important questions as we are not living under a dictatorship. Some may say that is what is needed. Nigeria Politics - the more you look, the less you see.

Interesting conversation right here, gentlemen.

It's a power pyramid, with the GCFR at the apex. If he wields his power effectively, it is possible to embark on national projects and touch a large number of states, if not all of them (e.g. the electrification project that was mentioned a few comments above).

The base of power was designed to be wide, and the top narrow for a reason. The president is the head, and the governors (councillors too) are the appendages. If the president is resolute in his philosophy/ideology, he'll get the job underway soon enough. Yes, he may experience initial inertia, but he's the head after all - it is so designed that the governors can't subvert his authority (and if they do, it would be easy to subjugate/eliminate the culprits.)

The president says he isn't using 40% of his executive power. Also, with his "Four years isn't enough to build Nigeria" mentality, it becomes almost clear that come 2015, Nigerians would have to think thrice before pressing colored thumbs against the slip earmarked "Goodluck Jonathan."

Ah but El Presidente is not all powerful ask Barak Obama. However, in Nigeria, there should be something to show for it. There is just too much waste.

Let Nigerians shine their eyes "Caveat Emptor" and Reject PDP at all the fronts. Nigeria never had it this bad since 1999 especially, this last three years. strange killings, Abductions, kidnapping, insurgence from Boko Haram, Corruption and impunity. All these, are what PDP brought into Nigerian lives. If by dint of imposition, rigging, and manipulation PDP sneak into power at the center, things shall fall apart and the center would not be able to hold itself.

Agreed. But we need an alternative party. The APC is probably not that party as they are made up of former chieftains of the PDP, key contributors to the issues at hand. You cannot just change your umbrella to a broom and be accepted.

Need something new - NLC should form a party :)

APC had established herself as a political party. If some PDP joined APC, does not make them (PDP) key player in APC. It is important to recognize one simple truth about PDP, it is most unlikely to rule out good yolk eggs among them. What does not exist in APC is corruption and impunity syndrome which is the hall mark of PDP as a party. There are conscience driven one's that felt looting should not continue. Some of them might have been pricked by their consciences. There is no where bad people does not exist.
What ever anyone wishes to say, "Broom" is a daily need in all household. It may be in any modern form, and it has been accepted nation-wide. Their achievements are visible to the blinds. I am not a politician, but saw what they were able to do in their respective states. My civic duty of voting is to be carried out on APC period. imagine One APC governor from Lagos State that metmophorsed into Sixteen governors across the six Geo-political zones.
Again, APC constructed Lekki road and toll for collecting token for maintaining the road, and the federal government went to court to be collecting vat from that proceed. What would any sane Nigerian say to that? It is high time to pick up the broom because the umbrella is turned.

What ideology would they build upon? if there would be anything new, it would not come from NLC because they have compromised their stand and sold their birth rights. Every thing now in Nigeria or Africa is dictated by money and not moral or conscience.

NLC is more disorganized than pdp
