Hon. Jerry Manwe (Taraba/PDP), Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, on Monday said that lawmakers deserve the jumbo pay they receive.
Hon. Manwe sited reasons such as High cost of elections, lack of a social security system and a peculiar political culture that thrives on patronage to back his claim.
According to Hon. Manwe, the cost of an election campaign is roughly 100million naira.
A recent survey reported that parliamentarians in Nigeria were among the top 20 highest paid legislators in the world.
According to him, the survey did not take into consideration the economic, social and political peculiarities in Nigeria.
“They have compared the salaries of legislators in Nigeria with those of our counterparts in Europe and America but they should also go further to ask how many of the legislators from Europe and America have their supporters queuing in front of their houses every morning asking for one favour or the other. How much do they spend for them to become parliamentarians? Don't forget that we have different cultures.
